How Much Does SAT Tutoring Cost?

How Much Does SAT Tutoring Cost?If you are considering an online college course in SAT prep, it is not at all unusual to wonder what SAT tutoring cost can be expected. The good news is that tutoring fees tend to be much lower than other courses that are available. This article will explore the actual costs for SAT prep and discuss what you can expect to pay to make sure you are getting a good education from a good provider. The fee varies from provider to provider. In fact, it varies by just about every aspect of your tutoring session, not to mention the overall time of your tutoring session. Some providers may charge by the hour or by the day. In order to determine exactly what you will be charged, you need to understand how different companies handle their rates and charges.First, you need to decide if you want a tutor that stays after class to help you with your essays or math. Some tutors will book an hour's worth of tutoring for you and then a single essay review or math exam, wh ile others will tutor several different subjects for you and then allow you to take the exams in order. You should consider this when deciding if you want to use a tutoring service for your education. Some tutoring companies charge a flat rate for tutoring for the SAT, while others may charge by the subject or for specific areas of the test. If you want to cover multiple sections of the SAT, you will need to know what each subject's required scores are and what you will need to pay for. The best way to find out what is going to be expected of you is to discuss your learning needs with a professional SAT tutor before your enrollment date. Most of the time, a good tutor will offer many methods of paying for the tutoring, such as payment by time, tutor by subject, or by subject and tutor by test. Once you get started, it is very important to stick with the program that you signed up for and not allow yourself to be distracted by other options. The best way to avoid a scuffle with a bad t utor is to stick with a program that you are comfortable with. The SAT test has become quite popular these days. Many students are taking the test and some are taking it in order to receive some type of college credit. By being aware of the SAT test prep and tutoring cost, you can ensure that you are giving yourself the best chance of passing the test and advancing in your studies. When choosing an SAT tutor, it is important to keep in mind your goals and wants. A tutor who only works on the essay portion of the test may not be the right fit for you. Always choose a tutor who can cover several different sections of the SAT, including math, reading, writing, and essay, in order to maximize your learning ability. Having more than one student to work with on a certain section of the test allows the student to study alongside another student who does not want to take the SAT.Before committing to any tutor, you should make sure that they are able to meet your learning needs and expectation s for the SAT test. If you feel that you may not learn the material on your own, then you should look for a tutor who will teach you the material. SAT prep and tutoring cost can be reduced by using a good tutor who offers competitive rates.

Have You Heard About Ice Boxes?

Have You Heard About Ice Boxes? So you've heard about ice boxes and want to know more about them. Ice boxes have been around for hundreds of years, but recently, a number of people have been using them for manufacturing purposes. These devices can be found at the most any hardware store and can be used for a variety of purposes, such as heating water, pumping fluids, or even allowing water to evaporate and come back as steam. The unique feature of these machines is that they can be configured to be self-contained, meaning that the container is not attached to the tank. They can also be used to pump water into a chemical furnace, where they heat the chemicals up and then force that steam through the furnace where it can be used to make many different things. There are many different types of ice boxes available, and the differences between them are often significant. For example, there are water tanks that sit on the side of the machine, and these are often designed with a large hole in the center. There are also those with a cylindrical shape, which is common in rural areas where they aren't required to provide steam.A cylinder shape has the most basic design, and the cylinder is designed to allow the box to spin on its own and create steam, but the same problems that could occur with other units can also arise. So if you plan on using one of these boxes, you need to look at the reasons why others don't use them, and see if they would work better for you.If you are thinking about an engineering field, you may want to look at some of the alternatives, especially if you are looking at starting a business. You may find that you could find a suitable niche for yourself without the difficulty that comes with a professional mechanical engineer. There are a number of others in the scientific type of industry, and there are of course a variety of more specialized engineering solutions, which are likely to have plenty of advantages. Whether you need to have the look of an e xpensive mansion, or just want something to serve you as a toolbox, or even if you simply want to save space and reduce your heating bill, there is a solution out there that may suit your needs. So there you have it - take some time to think about the particular case you are looking at and think about the need for your device, then consider which machinery is more suited to your requirements. That's it - there's no need to spend hours trying to get answers, because there are answers available to you.

It was the moment in which English ascendancy in the high seas became a real possibility. And, of course, it was the time in which kings and queens were the most fascinating, the most dastardly, and the most dramatic â€" with beguiling private lives , presiding over massive cultural production, and making England the country that it would later become.Yet, are all these things we think we know about the House of Tudor â€" and Tudor England in general â€" actually true? Is there anything left in this period in the history of England â€" from Henry VII to Elizabeth I â€" that is still surprising?Of course there is! And in this article, we’re going to look at some of the things you might not have known about the period â€" from the illegitimacy of the dynasty to the forgotten other king.Let’s take a look at some of the more surprising things about the Tudors. A Lancastrian, his House of Lancaster defeated Richard III of the House of York at the Battle of Bosworth Field to end the thirty-year long Wars of the Roses. Whilst Henry VII, after his coronation, very successfully cemented his position as a unifying force in English politics â€" marrying the Yorkist Elizabeth of York to end the War of the Roses â€" his position was actually really very vulnerable. His claim to be king was through his descendance from Edward III’s fourth son, John of Gaunt, and his mistress. Henry’s great-grandfather was therefore illegitimate â€" and Henry’s claim came through his mother’s side. This was something not very well thought of during these times.Henry was only the Lancastrian candidate to be king because all of those with a better claim had been killed during the war. And so, in many ways, he should never have been king in the first place.Find out more about the Tudor monarchs! The Scots and Welsh Might Not be Very Happy if You Called the Tudor Monarchs ‘British’When talking about the Tudors these days, the phrase ‘British history’ is always at risk of slipping out. Yet, at this point in time â€" the sixteenth century â€" there wasn’t really any such thing as ‘Britain’ at all.Scotland was a different country entirely â€" and one with which the English were continually at war â€" whilst Wales was hardly a defined thing at all either. It wasn’t until 1536 that Henry VIII’s Act of Union made Wales a part of the territory of the Tudor monarchs. Before that, Wales was administrated by the Principality of Wales and by the Marcher Lordships, which protected the border of England and lawless Wales.Although They were Actually WelshThe Tudors themselves were actually Welsh, with Henry Tudor descending from the Tudors, a family of the Welsh nobility.Henry VII’s grandfather was a certain Owen Tudor, who Anglicised his Welsh name, Owain ap Maredudd ap Tudur. He was the second husband of Catherine of Valois â€" whose first husband was Henry V â€" and his own father participated in the Glyndwr Rising, the last major demonstration of Welsh independence from England in the ear ly fifteenth century.Discover more about who the Tudors were!King Henry VIII Didn’t Break from Rome Just because of Anne BoleynIn our great national fantasy, the primary reason that Henry VIII instigated his massive political upheaval in the 1530s was due to his love â€" or lust â€" for Anne Boleyn. However, this is only really half of the story â€" if that. The promise of a marriage to Anne Boleyn â€" after a divorce from Catherine of Aragon â€" may well have sweetened the deal, yet this wonderful entwinement of personal life and statecraft is mainly romance.Rather, the main reasons for Henry’s break from Rome were a bit more political. He’d spent all of the country’s cash on a load of useless wars throughout the first half of his reign â€" and the promise of plenty more from ecclesiastical property was really quite appealing. There was massive dissatisfaction with the Catholic church across Europe, and this could be used as a way to facilitate his plans. One of the monasteries that suffered under Henry VIIIAnd Although Boleyn was Killed for Adultery, It Was Really Henry that was Being NaughtyAnne Boleyn, after the whole divorce debacle, was ultimately beheaded â€" an action apparently legitimated by Henry’s accusation of adultery.Yet, Henry was one of the most notorious philanderers ever to have sat in the English throne. It’s also thought that he had sexual affairs with Anne Boleyn’s sister, Mary, and is thought to have had plenty of illegitimate children. Sure, George III went mad and Charles I was executed. But no-one was used so cynically â€" and suffered such a fate so young â€" as Lady Jane Grey.Held up by Edward VI and his advisor, John Dudley, Duke of Northumberland, as the heir to the throne in 1553, Lady Jane didn’t find much support when she was proclaimed queen that year. Rather, the few supporters she did have soon turned against her. And, when Mary I was proclaimed queen nine days later, Lady Jane was imprisoned and, ultimately, executed. She died at the age of sixteen or seventeen.Despite this tragedy, she may well have been the first woman to have been queen of England. This depends who you are talking to, because some people say that this was Empress Matilda back in the twelfth century. Others say that Lady Jane was never actually queen at all, but that the first queen of England was actually her successor, Mary I.Mary I Doesn’t Really Deserve the Name ‘Bloody Mary’Mary Tudor, or Mary I, really has a bad reputation. Such a bad reputation, in fact, that she’s more commonly known by her nickname, ‘Bloody Mary’, than by any other name. These days, historians are realising that this isn’t exactly fair. Sure, Mary I did indeed have a few people killed during her reign â€" but not near as many as her fellow Tudors. In fact, the 283 people that she had burned at the stake seems rather dignified and restrained in comparison to the rest of her family.Henry VIII is said to have executed over seventy thousand people, for example â€" which we’d surely all agree seems a little excessive. Elizabeth, whilst admittedly ruling for much longer than Mary, had six hundred people executed too.We Should Really Stop Being So Mean about Mary TudorShe wasn’t really that bloody, Bloody Mary. In fact, she had a bit of a tough life, honestly. From puberty onwards, she was regularly ill â€" more so than many in her time and position. She was believed to have had something known as ‘strangulation of the womb’ â€" which ultimately caused her to believe herself pregnant even when she was not.Maybe she wasn’t such a bad queen after all, as many of the things that Elizabeth has been so praised for â€" financial stability and naval expansion â€" were actually Mary’s ideas. Elizabeth I (1533-1603) Queen of England and Ireland from 1558, last Tudor monarch. Version of the Armada portrait attributed to George Gower c1588. (Photo by: Photo 12/UIG via Getty Images)Queen Elizabeth I of England Wasn’t as Universally Popular as We Might Now BelieveAnd just as Mary has developed a bit of a bad rep, maybe Elizabeth wasn’t such a great queen as we like to imagine.Under her rule, England underwent a whole serious of rebellions and attempted coups. There was the Northern Rising of 1569, the famous attempt to put Mary, Queen of Scots on the throne; the Ridolfi Plot of 1571, which saw an Italian banker try to arrange a Spanish invasion of England; and the 1583 Throckmorton Plot, again revolving around Mary, Queen of Scots, that aimed to murder the Queen.Find out more about life under the Tudors! The English Didn’t Really Defeat the Spanish Armada in 1588One of the funniest things about courses on the Tudors in secondary schools is that they all end in 1588, the year of the Spanish Armada, which was defeated by the English by good luck and some bad British weather. In fact, in 1589, Elizabeth ordered a ‘counter-Armada’, led by Francis Drake and John Norreys. This, in turn, failed dramatically, and actually ushered in another long period of Spanish dominance in the seas.In light of this, the episode of the Spanish Armada doesn’t seem like much of a victory at all. There’s Another Monarch in Tudor History that We All ForgetStrangely enough, we usually remember five, or six, Tudor monarchs: Henry VII, Henry VIII, Edward VI, Lady Jane Grey (maybe), Mary I, and Elizabeth I.However, there was a further monarch during this period that people generally forget. This was Philip II of Spain, the husband of Mary I and holder of the title ‘King of England’. In diplomatic despatches, in parliament, and even on English coins, Philip was recognised as King of England â€" and it was high treason to deny his authority. However, he couldn’t read a w ord of English. In fact, all state matters had to be published in Latin or Spanish so that he could understand them!

How to grasp Dutch Grammar

How to grasp Dutch Grammar Dutch grammar explained ChaptersThe use of lidwoorden (articles) in the Dutch languageCombined nounsDiminutives in the Dutch languageThe different time references in Dutch GrammarOur conclusions about this subjectDutch grammar is complicated in some aspects, but often more simple than that in neighbouring countries (think, for example, about the Nahmfallen in German which do not exist in Dutch). In this blog, we are going to discuss four subjects with you involving the correct use of grammar in the Dutch language. These are: the use of lidwoorden (articles), combined nouns, diminutives in the Dutch language and the different time references. There are not necessarily all complicated, but they are important to correctly speak, write and read in Dutch. As far as possible we have always attempted to bring the in relation to their English equivalents. We have attempted to bring them as simple as possible for you. We hope the explanations can be of use for you! JessicaDutch Teacher 5.00 (5) £21/h1st lesson free! There are no naamvallen, like in German for example, that make it more complicated. Principally there are three lidwoorden in the Dutch language. These are: de, het en een. These are separated in bepaald and onbepaald (basically, determined and undetermined). In general, the following rules apply: de is used for male and female nouns. Het is for nouns that do not have a gender. In English, this is easier, as one only uses the. These lidwoorden are both determined. Een is the only undetermined lidwoord. It can be placed before any noun and does not appoint a specific person or other noun, but creates a general, non-distinctive group of nouns. We can explain this using the following example. De man loopt over straat - meaning - the man is walking over the street. Een man loopt over straat - a man is walking over the street. So actually, a and an are English for een.So, why is it so important to know if a word is a de- word or a het-word. It is important because the spelling of the adjective before the noun changes when a het-word is changed in to an een-woord.We can show this using the following example. Het grote raam (the big window) - een groot raam. De grote stoel (the big chair - een grote stoel. This difference in spelling is the case for every het word.Approximately 1/3 of all of the Dutch nouns are het-words.The following words are typically het-words:All dimunit ives (we will discuss the Dutch version of these below)All verbs that are used as a noun (for example in Dutch: het wandelen)There are a number of other categories but those have so many exceptions that we won't mention them here.Learning Dutch is a big job.Combined nounsThe Dutch language has an exceptionally high amount of combined nouns. In the English language, these words would consist of two different words. We have listed a few examples for you:account number in Dutch is rekeningnummer.computer games in Dutch is computerspelletjes.health center becomes gezondheidscentrumThere is no need denying it. This does not make the Dutch language much easier to understand or read. The only solution is to simply learn these combinations by heart. If you stumble across a long word in Dutch, make it easier for your self and try to split it into several smaller words. Now, we will discuss those one-by-one.The type: gummetje, kinnetje, gangetje, balletje. The diminutive here end with -etje. This applies to all words that end with m, n, ng or a l where the last vowel before the final consonant is a short tone. Examples are: bommetje and cd-rommetjes. The regular words here would be bom and cd-rom. Or tongetje and kringetje, where the regular words would be tong and kring. If there is one consonant after one vowel before the -etje then t he consonant is doubled, like in parasolletje - where the normal word is parasol. The type leerlingetje, oefeningetje. When a woord ends with -ing and the emphasis is not on the syllable before it then you als add -etje. For example: lievelingetje - where the regular word is lieveling and wandelingetje - where the regular word is wandeling. The type karretje. When a word consists of only one syllable, contains a short tone and ends with r, you also add -etje. For example: barretje (bar), porretje (por). This also applies to combined nouns like minibarretje (minibar) and filmsterretje (filmster). The type bezempje. When a word ends with m, lm or rm and when that is proceeded by a long tone, then you add -pje. For example: albumpje (album) and riempje (riem).Het type puddinkje. When a word has more than one syllable, ends with -ing and then emphasis is on the syllable before -ing, then you add -kje. The g is left out. For example: beloninkje (beloning) and bestellinkje (bestelling).Het t ype streepje, taartje, hoekje, eendje, baasje, boefje. Words that end with p,t,k,d,s or f you add je. For example, popje (pop) and potje (pot). This is the most basic variation. We will be the last one to deny that this is super complicated. Again, most Dutch people do this correct automatically. For you, there is no other option but learning the rules by heart. This is a typical view of the Netherlands. The different time references in Dutch GrammarIn Dutch there are eight different time references. That are a few more then there are in the English language.   Four of these are perfect, and four are imperfect. Perfect means that the task has been completed at the time that you are writing the sentence. The perfect tense in Dutch always has the verb hebben or zijn in the sentence. The imperfect tense applies that a certain action has not been completed. The imperfect tense also applies when it is irrelevant whether the action has been completed.First, we will discuss the imperfect ones: OTT: onvoltooid tegenwoordige tijd - loosely this translates to imperfect present tense. Our example sentence is: Jan slaat de hond. Jan is beating the dog.   He is currently beating the dog and has not completed.OVT: onvoltooid verleden tijd - loosely this translates to the imperfect past tense. Jan sloeg de hond. Jan was beating the dog and this is not completed.OTTT: onvoltooid tegenwoordige toekomende tijd - loosely this is translated to the imperfect present-future tense. Jan zal de hond slaan, meaning Jan will beat the dog. It is an incomplete task, that has also not started. It will be performed in the future.OVTT: onvoltooid verleden toekomende tijd - loosely this is translated to the imperfect past future tense. Jan zou de hond slaan, i.e. Jan would hit the dog. This loosely translates as the imperfect past future time.We hope you are still with us, because here come the perfect tenses:VTT: voltooid tegenwoordige tijd - loosely this is translated to perfect present tense. J an heeft de hond geslagen. Jan has beaten the dog. The action was taken in the present and has been completed.VVT: voltooid verleden tijd - loosely this is translated to perfect past tense. Jan had de hond geslagen. Jan had beaten the dog. The action was taken in the past and has been completed.VTTT: voltooid tegenwoordige toekomende tijd - loosely this translates to perfect future tense. Jan zal de hond hebben geslagen - Jan would have beaten the dog. The action would have been completed in the future.VVTT: voltooid verleden toekomende tijd - loosely translated as the perfect past future time. Jan zou de hond hebben geslagen - this translates identically in English. Finally, a bit more advice in this regard. In one sentence always stick to the same timeYou can recognize the time in a sentence based on the verbs it includes. As mentioned before, the perfect tense always has the word hebben en zijn in it. The future tense always has the verb zullen in it.We have decided to keep this as simple and not to also include the alteration of verbs with the different tenses. To learn more about Dutch verb conjugation, click the link. The landscape of the Netherlands. Our conclusions about this subjectWe have tried to make this blog consist of a combination of complicated and less complicated subjects in Dutch grammar. The combined nouns are not that grammatically complicated, they simply make it a language difficult to read. The approach to them is fairly unique in the Dutch language. Learning them by heart and tackling them one at a time will make them easier to grasp.Time references and diminutives are a different story as they have some many exceptions. We can only simplify that to a certain extent. The problem is that, for some reason, Dutch people automatically seem to know it all. Dutch people are generally fairly good in their own grammar.Keep practising as much as possible, reading helps a lot to understand grammar and it really is far from impossible. Finally, ther e are extensive, free online tests available that you can take to practice and to establish the level of your knowledge.

Definition of Ecosystem Online Biology Tutors Tutorpace

Definition of Ecosystem Online Biology Tutors Tutorpace Ecosystem is a self-sustained and self-regulated segment of nature or landscape where living organisms interact and exchange materials amongst themselves and with their physical environment. The term was coined by Arthur Tansle.Ecosystem can be large or small, temporary or permanent, natural or anthropogenic, terrestrial or aquatic, complete or incomplete. Ecosystem has a number of abiotic (nonliving)and biotic (living) components, all of which are interrelated and interact with one another. There is a regular inflow of energy from outside which is trapped by plants along with inorganic nutrient to form food. This is the primary productivity of an ecosystem. The food along with its contained energy passes to other biotic components. There is dissipation of energy at every step of transfer and functioning of biological systems. It is lost to environment. Inorganic nutrients are not lost. They are released for recycling when organic matter and inorganic wastes undergo decomposition. Because of regular inflow of energy and its dissipation with a regular input and output of nutrients, an ecosystem is called open system. On the basis of nutritional requirements biotic components of an ecosystem are divided into three groups-producers, consumers and decomposers. Producers in an ecosystem are the green plants because they have got the capacity to prepare their food using solar energy by photosynthesis. Consumers are those organisms that consume the synthesized food or producers. The consumers depend on producers directly or indirectly. Decomposers are the saprophytic microorganisms which obtain nourishment from organic remains.

5 Ways to Tailor Your Workspace for Success - Introvert Whisperer

Introvert Whisperer / 5 Ways to Tailor Your Workspace for Success - Introvert Whisperer 5 Ways to Tailor Your Workspace for Success Introverts in the workplace can feel like a fish out of water. American workplaces are often filled with commotion, talking, and a general acceptance of outspokenness that can drain even the most well-adjusted introverts. You might even start to feel that your personal workspace isn’t giving you what’s required to balance your needs with the interpersonal connectedness required by your job. Struggling to be introverted in an extroverted work environment isn’t fun. So, before you do something that makes someone feel you are antisocial or shy, try a few of these strategies to create a workspace that fosters creativity, boosts productivity, and delivers a necessary element of quiet. Create Your Own Privacy Many open office plans have low cubicle walls or wide openings that can allow others to pop into your space without any notice. Try creating a sense of privacy without being too obvious. Build a shelter with a freestanding bookshelf or large potted plants. You can also mount a coat hanger to one side of your cubicle to create a makeshift curtain by merely hanging your jacket up every morning. If there isn’t any way to build your own privacy, talk to your supervisor to see if a move could be set in motion. Relocating to a cubicle that’s up against a wall can give you some security at least on one side. This might be just enough to provide you with a sense of privacy so that you can concentrate and work a bit more like yourself. Enjoy Lunch at Your Desk Introverts need their lunch break to recharge and restore balance. Instead of dodging others in the breakroom, consider eating alone at your desk. While some people think that a table for one sounds awful, one research study found that the types and amounts of food you eat are influenced by who is around you at mealtimes. So, eating alone might be better for your soul and your waistline. To get the most out of your time noshing at your desk, consider doing weekly meal prep or subscribing to a meal delivery service. Meal services send you the foods you need to prepare healthy meals at home. Many of these services offer options for special diets, such as low carb, gluten-free, or heart healthy. You should also pack healthy snacks like fruits and veggies in small jars. Keep them on your desk so that you can grab them quickly. These options give you more control over what you’re putting in your body than running through the line at a fast food restaurant or eating from the vending machine. Increase Workplace Wellness You want to keep your introverted creative juices flowing and your brain power fully intact throughout the day. This means you need to make sure your physical health is just as cared for as your personality type. Along with creating physical and symbolic barriers, try to set up your workspace in a way that promotes health. Be sure to take a few breaks throughout the day to get up and move. Consider apps like Stand Up! or Awareness to be sure you get enough activity and rest from the computer throughout your day. Too much sitting can be tough on your back and bottom, but staring at a computer for eight-plus hours each day can leave you with digital eye strain. Your posture is essential for workplace wellness, too. Sit up straight and ensure that you’re not holding too much tension in your neck or shoulders. Add in Some Comfort The sterile look of a cubicle can leave just about anyone lacking creativity. To help bring bits of home to the office with you, add a few pictures of your favorite people or pets to your desk. If a particular scent calms you, try adding an oil diffuser or candle to your workspace. Another excellent idea is to keep a roller ball dispenser of your favorite calming essential oils handy and place them on your wrists or temples throughout your day. Music can offer a fantastic escape for introverts. Pop in a set of earbuds or wear headphones to buffer out the commotion of the office. Have fun with your playlist and choose songs all introverts should have â€" some of which even tackle the subject of being introverted. Try Flexible Work Space and Hours If you really struggle to find balance in your workspace, consider changing your hours, if possible. Coming in an hour earlier or staying an hour later than co-workers might be enough of a buffer to keep you productive. You can also practice an hour of power to kickstart your day and get moving in the right direction. Consider reserving community space, like a conference room, when you know you have looming deadlines. Book a place for an hour and take work with you that you can do without your desktop, or travel light and bring your laptop and a notebook. Introverts aren’t necessarily shy or antisocial. However, they can suffer from being over-stimulated in a world that seems to cater to their extroverted counterparts. Try these strategies to find the balance you need in your workspace. How To Improve Your Writing Skills

How To Improve Your Writing Skills Writing is one of the more interesting subjects to teach, it may not be the most difficult, but it is definitely different than teaching math or science. William G. Tierney and Stefani R. Relles, two professors, guest wrote an article in the Washington Post about teaching writing. Their main point is that teachers spend too much time addressing bad writing and not nearly enough time helping students improve. They see writing as a product and not a process, and that is the root of the problem. Together, they have created a program that seeks to effectively teach writing to college-bound students who have struggled with the subject. Most of the students they help have never written the prototypical, formal five-page paper. They have very little experience developing a core idea or argument to articulate beyond two or three pages. Through this course, Tierney and Relles have identified four ways to teach students how to write better. Define set, understandable goals: There are too many writingtests. These tests only give students vague results, like you scored in the 85th percentile. Instead, teachers need to pick a set goal, like helping students become college-ready writers. Teachers need to break down what good writing is into compartments and subjects, and show how one begins to craft a solid essay. Teach students how to revise: Teachers need to stop just writing comments at the end of essays, as ways to improve their next essay. Most of the time, students dont even remember them. Teachers need to spend more time with students during the writing process, helping them improve an existing paper. Teach students how to form thoughts: Writing is not thinking. Writing is putting thoughts into words. Students are often taught how to think critically and analytically about themes and problems, which is the first step in writing. However, they are not taught the second step nearly enough, which is finding the words for your thoughts. Require more/longer writing: Budget cuts have increased class sizes, and larger classes means one thing for English teachers: more reading. So, many cut down on the essays and writing pieces they assign simply because they dont want to read more. Longer papers force students to stretch out their writing, instead of cramming it all into a one- or two-hour block. This forces students to spend multiple days with their assignments, which creates more revisions and ultimately better writing. Tierney and Relles say that making these suggestions could change the entire way in which writing is taught, something that might be too controversial to implement. But, the problems bad writing causes are simply unavoidable. Many college freshmen are placed in remedial writing courses, which are lower-level, college classes designed to help them catch up with other students. These classes are often referred to as the gateway to dropping out because the graduation rate for these students is very poor at only 17 percent. Tierney and Relles argue that these teachers need to place a stronger emphasis on teaching the craft in these courses, instead of telling the students they are not good writers. Even President Obama is targeting these classes, saying they could help produce more college graduates.
